So, let's discuss about this novel. This novel follows the young women to their new home. The novel is set in Southwest England, London and Sussex between 1792 and 1797.
🦋 Some information about "sense And sensibility" novel:
"Sense And sensibility " is a novel written by Jane Austen. This novel's first edition came out in three volumes in 1811. This novel depends of two character's factor. And also two sisters. This novel was reasonably well- liked and also very successful. Jane Austen was discouraged but her brother convinced a London publisher to put out the book, and the result was the beginning of Austen's career as a novelist. The novel was initially attributed to " A Lady" , her later novel novels also neglected to mention Austen's name as author and instead are credited to " The author of Sense and sensibility." Having a strong heart like Elinor and a latent sense similar to Marianne, Jane Austen displayed her characteristics through her characters. Elinor and Marianne were two main characters that Jane Austen used to display her true character. Elinor is very devoted to her family and tries to do everything she can to support them. Every now and then, when the family is in need of advice, they would all look to Elinor. Marianne was the younger daughter in the family of three sisters and she is always caught up in romantic poetry. At one time in the novel, Marianne went through a catastrophe because the love of her life had left her. Marianne tries to hide her fear to avoid all her distress. Both of the character's lifestyle reflected that of Jane Austens'. In the writing of the novel Sense and Sensibility, Austen wrote the novel according to her own passionate feelings. People began to notice her writings towards the end of her life. Jane Austen's lifestyle and characteristics were revealed through her characters Marianne and Elinor in her novel Sense and Sensibility.
Jane Austen began writing novels when she was in her early twenties, she was a very intellectual women. She enjoyed reading many books in her life that gave her an advantage in writing great novels. When Austen wrote the novel Sense and Sensibility, much of her characteristics were seen through the novel. "Jane Austen is thus a mistress of much deeper emotion than appears upon the surface. She stimulates us to supply what is not there." After Willouby's sudden break up with Marianne, many deep vivid emotions are shown to the reader. Austen lived in a society where women mostly worked on farms. Agriculture was the largest employment for women.Chapter One: The Social Rules of Austen’s Time and the People Who Abused Them,“Instead of falling a sacrifice to an irresistible passion, as once she had fondly
flattered herself with expecting…she found herself at nineteen, submitting to new
attachments, entering on new duties, placed in a new home, a wife, the mistress of a
family, and the patroness of a village.”- Jane Austen on Marianne’s fate in Sense and
Sensibility, Volume III, Chapter XIV
Jane Austen’s contemporaries defined a proper lady very singularly and clearly.
Much was written in an attempt to guide young women in society’s ways so they could
ensure a good marriage, the best position a female could hope for at the time. In her
novels Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, Austen addresses some of these
social ideals. At times she supports conventional values, such as living a virtuous life and
women finding happiness in marriage. In other places she points out the faults of a
society that encourages certain modes of behavior and thought while its members are
either too eager in following them or flout them for selfish purposes. With her work
acting as a sort of social commentary, Austen does not present herself as completely
conservative in promoting the social traditions of her time, but neither is she calling for a
feminist revolution on a grand scale. Rather, she is forcing people to look at their world
in a more critical way, to follow social rules while recognizing that they are not always
reasonable, especially in regards to the view of women. In this way, Austen’s heroines
achieve an independence that can operate within convention.
♦️ Character's in this novel:
💎 Theme of this novel " Sense And sensibility" :
Theme always give different way of understanding of the book. Jane Austen describes many ideas in this novel. So let's see central ideas of this novel.
👉[1] Money / inheritance:
This is main theme of this novel. Throughout of this we can see the what is main factor important in Dashwood's femily. Money always not good for everything. I have connected this novel for example like " All My Son" Means both ideas same " money is everything." But when i read this book "Sense And sensibility" so " Money is not everything." Laws surrounding inheritance are what put the Dashwood. Beginning of the this novel so " lack of money." also situation handle and only reason for money and inheritance.
👉 [2] Theme of gender:
Another central ideas of this novel. So in this novel suggest limitations of gender. Society always not aloud for everything. Society always give different of men and women. So we can see this novel. Both characters like Elinor and Marianne. Gender is individual thought. I have include one thought:
" Gender always connected with self." We can see the final volume of the novel " sense and sensibility " , Marianne Dashwood, having reflected on her excess of sensibility. " I am no longer surprised at your knowing only six accomplished women. I rather wonder at your knowing any."
Even if Austen satirizes the fight for control in marriage. And main reason gender. Society always mix gender and many ideas.
👉 [3] Expectation v/s . Reality:
why expectation is always not good?In this is an especially important theme. This theme connected with Marianne and her mother. Whose romantic characters. Marianne always expectation same like pecola ( "The Bluest Eyes" ) . But reality and expectation is different.
👉 [4] Marriage:
This theme suggests many things. This theme is most important in this novel. And best example suggests of this novel's character like : Marianne and Elinor. Marriage is always not choice. But why marriage is necessity? That is question.
👉 [5] Discretion:
Of the utmost importance in polite society. Where it is not to one's advantage to let people know alk that you and feel. We can see the Marianne' life. Marianne's lack of leads to a great deal of gossip and a very public snubbing by Willoughby; lack of discretion in many others indicates poor manners and lack of refinement.
👉 [6] Self - sacrifice and selflessness:
This theme is most important in this novel . Elinor is the symbol of self- sacrifice. Elinor willingly helps her sister get through adversities in her life. " Elinor was to be the comforter of others in her own distresses, no less than in theirs; and all the comfort than could be given by assurances of her own composure of mind."
So , Elinor unselfishly puts aside her emotions to comfort Marianne after Willoughby rejects her breaks her heart ." What ! While attending me in all my misery, has this been your heart?"
👉[7] Hypocrisy:
A vast number of characters in the novel embody this trait to varying degrees; John and Fanny , Lady Middleton, the Steele girls, Mrs.Ferrars , and Robert etc. Unfortunately, none of these characters is taught any better in the course of the novel, as Hypocrisy is an unavoidable part of human nature and almost a part of polite society as well.
🛑 Conclusion:
In short Jane Austen suggests many ideas in this novel now present time we cam see the feminism in society. And many of problem come in women's life. Feminism is main factor in this novel.
